Bartending License Requirements for Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, there aren’t any state regulations in place that require a server or bartender to be licensed in order to sell alcohol.

It is important to keep in mind some employers will require bartenders to complete such courses regardless of state or city laws.

Bartending Age Massachusetts

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, in Massachusetts, you must be at least 18 years of age to bartend.

The legal age of bartending in Massachusetts is later confirmed by the state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC) on an FAQ page published in Fall of 2022. The document states:

Nothing in § 34 prohibits a licensee from employing a person 18 years old or older for the direct handling, selling, mixing or serving of alcohol or alcoholic beverages.

Wet/Dry Counties

All of the towns in the state of Massachusetts are wet EXCEPT for the following:

  • Alford – Berkshire County
  • Dunstable – Middlesex County
  • Chilmark – Dukes County
  • Gosnold – Dukes County
  • Hawley – Franklin County
  • Montgomery – Hampden County
  • West Hampton – Hampshire County
  • Mount Washington – Berkshire County
